What We Do
One of the most significant advances in health IT is the shift away from paper records, the ones often found in filing cabinets at a medical office. It was once almost impossible to imagine having access to all the information about a patient with just a few clicks of a mouse. But today, secure, private electronic health records (EHRs) are becoming standard practice, and New York State is taking a leading role in the nation.
Our Regional Extension Center program assists physicians, clinics, nursing homes and other healthcare providers make the transition from paper-based to electronic health records. We provide consulting and training services, and offer guidance from adoption of new technologies all the way to achieving Meaningful Use and beyond.
The Statewide Health Information Network for New York (or the SHIN-NY) is what will enable health information exchange. As more providers go digital, there is a greater opportunity for sharing patient data between those entrusted with patient care. The creation, expansion, security and management of this network is a long-term project for NYeC. A connected New York will offer better, safer, and faster treatment for all patients.
As healthcare technology grows, new policy must be written. NYeC’s Statewide Collaborative Process allows for as many minds and voices as possible to contribute to this. An essential undertaking of NYeC is to develop and improve policy, to set standards, and to insure complete patient privacy and security. We believe that the best way to do this is by creating a fully transparent forum for discussion and debate.
Education: For patients and healthcare providers alike, NYeC strives to be New York State’s public resource for health IT. We serve as an educational tool, to address consumer concerns regarding privacy and security, and to increase the general level of understanding about the health information landscape.
